Learn to Use Digital Devices Safely

Many Canadians spend upwards of 11 hours a day using a digital device. From television and smartphones to tablets and computers, it’s no secret that we heavily rely on these devices for work and leisure. So, it can be especially discouraging for those who experience the uncomfortable side effects of digital eye strain.

So what does digital eye strain look like? Symptoms may include:

  • Headaches
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sore or irritated eyes
  • Burning or itching eyes
  • Excessive tearing or dry eyes
  • Excessive blinking
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sore neck, shoulders, or back
  • Difficulty concentrating

Treating Digital Eye Strain

Treatment for digital eye strain usually involves changes to your digital device habits and other daily habits.

  • Give your eyes consistent breaks throughout the day. The 20-20-20 rule will help you remember to do this: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This will let your eyes relax and readjust.
  • Practice proper workstation ergonomics. Appropriate posture will relieve some of the stress on your body, which can increase your chance of developing eye strain. This will include positioning your screen at arm’s length and 20 degrees below eye level and using a comfortable, supportive chair.
  • Set your screen colour and contrast to suit your eyes. Additionally, adjust your screen brightness to match your environment.
  • Reduce glare on your screen by dimming the lights in the room. Position your screen away from bright lights or windows. If this isn’t possible, try using an anti-glare screen cover.
  • Keep your screens clean and free from dust and fingerprints that reduce visibility.
