Crisp, Clear Vision Without Glasses

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you’ve likely considered laser eye surgery at some point. There are many different procedures available, but they each correct refractive errors like hyperopia, myopia, and presbyopia. What option is best will depend on your particular needs and unique health concerns.

At Legacy Eye Care, we provide full-service laser eye surgery consultations and referrals for LASIK and PRK. Both procedures were introduced in the 1990s, use an excimer laser, and have good results.

What Is PRK?

Photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK) corrects refractive errors by reshaping the cornea, the eye’s clear outer dome.

The surgeon begins by removing the epithelium (the outer layer of the cornea) and then uses the excimer laser to reshape the tissue under the cornea just enough to correct vision. A bandage lens is then placed on the eye to help with healing.

PRK has a high success rate and is generally considered safer and more effective than LASIK because it doesn’t leave a corneal flap. However, it takes longer for your eyes to heal and tends to be a more uncomfortable procedure.

What is LASIK?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is a bit more complicated than PRK.

The surgeon cuts a flap in the side of the cornea and folds it back. They will then use an excimer laser to reshape the tissues below, correcting refractive errors. The flap is then replaced to act as a bandage and is left to heal on its own.

LASIK tends to heal quicker and with less postoperative discomfort than PRK. However, the flap created during the procedure may be prone to injury and complications.

Preparing for Laser Eye Surgery

It’s important to have realistic expectations when it comes to corrective eye surgery. Some people will still need glasses, especially those over 40. Your eyes and prescription will also continue to change as you age, which means you may need prescription glasses in the future.

There are also some risks involved, no matter the procedure you undergo.

A comprehensive consultation will allow us to ensure you’re an ideal candidate for laser eye surgery. We’ll also use this time to go over your surgical options and answer all your questions and concerns.
