Protecting Your Vision Starts Here

If you’re living with diabetes, your eyes need a little extra attention. Diabetes doesn’t just affect your blood sugar—it can quietly impact your vision, too. That’s why regular eye exams are one of the most important steps you can take to protect your sight.

At Legacy Eye Care, we specialize in diabetic eye exams that go beyond the basics. With diagnostic technology and a compassionate approach, we’re here to catch small changes early so you can stay ahead of potential problems and see clearly for years to come.

How Diabetes Affects the Eyes

Diabetes affects how the body processes sugar. When blood glucose levels remain high, they can damage blood vessels and nerves throughout the body, including in the eyes. The tiny, delicate structures in your eyes are especially vulnerable. Over time, diabetes can increase your risk of:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Diabetic macular edema (DME)
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Eye muscle nerve paralysis

Even short-term spikes in blood sugar can cause temporary blurred vision due to changes in fluid levels or swelling in the eye.

Keeping Your Eyes Healthy with Diabetes

If you have diabetes, there are several important steps you can take to protect your vision:

  • Manage your blood glucose levels. Keep track of your HBA1C values and follow your healthcare provider’s guidance.
  • Control your blood pressure and cholesterol. Diabetes can affect blood vessels in your eyes, so maintaining healthy levels helps reduce risk.
  • Schedule a dilated eye exam every year. Regular exams allow your optometrist to detect early changes and prevent vision loss.

Why Annual Eye Exams Matter

The Canadian Diabetes Guidelines recommend annual eye exams for people living with diabetes. These exams help us:

  • Detect signs of disease early
  • Track changes in your eye health over time
  • Create a proactive treatment plan when needed

At Legacy Eye Care, we use innovative diagnostic tools to get a clear view of your eyes.

Diagnosing Diabetic Eye Disease

The best way to prevent diabetic complications is by managing your diabetes through regular eye exams. These exams will establish a baseline for your ocular health, which allows your optometrist to monitor your eyes over time and detect even the smallest changes in your eyes or vision.

We’ve invested in diagnostic equipment to help us catch the smallest signs of eye disease and provide accurate and effective diagnoses.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT is a noninvasive imaging test that uses light waves to create high-resolution, cross-sectional images of your retina. This innovative technology allows us to examine the layers of retinal tissue in detail, helping us detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy, macular swelling, or other retinal conditions, often before any symptoms appear.

Fundus Camera

Our fundus camera takes high-definition, colour photographs of the back of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. These detailed images allow us to closely monitor your ocular health and identify early signs of diabetic complications, such as abnormal bleeding, scar tissue, or retinal damage, so we can act before they progress.

Supporting You Every Step of the Way

An eye disease diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Our experienced team will guide you through every step, from early detection to personalized care plans.
