What are Cataracts?
Inside each of your eyes is a natural lens that helps focus light onto the retina, allowing you to see clearly at different distances. Over time, proteins in the lens can begin to break down and clump together, causing the lens to become cloudy. This clouding is known as a cataract.
Cataracts usually develop slowly and are a normal part of aging. In fact, most people over 60 will experience some degree of cataract development. However, early diagnosis and ongoing care can help you manage symptoms effectively and determine when surgery may be beneficial.

Symptoms of Cataracts
Cataracts may begin with subtle changes in your vision. As they progress, you may notice:
- Frequent changes in your eyeglass prescription
- Blurry, hazy, or cloudy vision
- Difficulty seeing at night or in low light
- Faded or dull colours
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Halos around lights
- Double vision in one eye
Risk Factors for Cataracts
While age is the most common cause, several other factors may increase your risk of developing cataracts:
- Long-term use of corticosteroids or certain medications
- Diabetes and other chronic health conditions
- Family history of cataracts
- Smoking or heavy alcohol use
- Excessive UV exposure (sunlight)
- Previous eye injury or surgery

Cataract Treatment & Co-Management
In the early stages, cataracts can often be managed with brighter lighting, anti-glare lenses, and frequent updates to your glasses or contact lens prescription. But when vision loss begins to interfere with your daily life, such as reading, driving, or recognizing faces, cataract surgery may be recommended.
At Legacy Eye Care, we offer cataract co-management, which means we work closely with trusted local ophthalmologists to coordinate your care before and after surgery.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a safe and effective outpatient procedure that replaces your clouded natural lens with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The results can be life-changing, restoring clarity and contrast to your vision.
At Legacy Eye Care, we provide:
- Ongoing post-operative care to support a smooth recovery
- Cataract evaluations and diagnosis
- Lifestyle-based treatment planning
- Pre-operative testing and referral to trusted surgeons
